Sperm Quality of Hatchery‐Reared Lake Trout Throughout the Spawning Season

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate variation in sperm quality metrics (motility, velocity, linearity, longevity, and density) of hatchery‐reared Lake Trout Salvelinus namaycush throughout the spawning season. Seasonal variation in sperm quality was investigated using both a regression and repeated‐measures approach. Sperm was collected from the same 16 individuals over four sampling periods, separated by 3‐week intervals. Regression analyses showed that 7–27% of the variation in sperm traits could … Show more

“…Typical fertilization protocols have to be well designed for producing progeny from a relative limited number of eggs (Johnson et al, 2013) due to the possible difficulty in finding females of endangered pure autochthonous trout. However, the knowledge of sperm quality parameters can be used to minimize, at the same time, the probability to reduce genetic variability of the wild population.…”

“…In 1983, wild fish were manually spawned [10 single-pair crosses (10 males and 10 females)] to establish 10 presumably unrelated families for studies in captivity. motility, velocity, linearity, longevity, and spermatocrit) tends to peak in the middle of the spawning season (early November to early December; Johnson et al, 2013), therefore we can exclude any seasonal effects on sperm quality in this study. 44.1468;long.…”
