Spermatological Investigations in Patients Treated with Etretinate and Isotretinoin

Abstract: Summary:  Possible side effects of the retinoids etretinate and isotretinoin on the germinal epithelium were examined. 15 men recevietretinate and 13 isotretinoin. After 16 weeks of treatment at therapeutic doses, no changes were observed in fundamental spermatological parameters. On the basis of examinations and data in the literature, we hold the opinion that retinoid treatment is to be considered safe from the andrological viewpoint. Zusammenfassung:  Die mögliche Nebenwirkung von Retinoid (Etretinat und Is… Show more

“…Amory et al administered isotretinoin to patients between the ages of 21 and 60 years with impaired sperm parameters, and found no significant change in their sperm motility, but observed an increase in their sperm concentrations (12). On the other hand, some other human studies reported that isotretinoin treatment did not affect spermatogenesis and hypothalamicpituitary-gonadal axis (13)(14)(15). The reason for the different results in our study and those mentioned above may be due to the difference in molecular doses, various uncontrollable non-standard subjective factors that affect the sperm parameters of people with different physical factors such as environment and diet.…”

“…and Parsch et al. including a limited number of patients reported isotretinoin therapy to have no effect on spermiogram parameters [ 12 , 26 ], although these studies did not mention the presence of any testicular pathology that might affect spermiogram values in the sample. Amory et al.…”

“…As an effective treatment for moderate to severe AV, systemic isotretinoin is the first choice of treatment [ 11 ]. Studies of male fertility and the use of isotretinoin, however, are limited and include a small number of patients [ 12–17 ].…”

“…These are further demethoxylated and are eliminated through bile as glucoronide derivatives or via kidneys as soluble metabolites [9][10] . Among all three generations, tretinoin has the shortest half-life followed by bexarotene, Isotretinoin and acitretin whereas etretinate has longer half-life 11 . The pharmacokinetics of all three generation of retinoid is given in Table 2.…”
