“…The third strain, the Ottawa Meat Control strain (Strain C), was a synthetic strain of the meat type. Two of these strains (A and C) have been described in earlier papers in greater detail (Gowe, Johnson, Downs, Gibson, Mountain, Strain &Tinney, 1959, andGowe 1961a). All three strains had been randomly bred for at least two generations.…”

“…Immediately after each semen collection period and after the ten ejaculates were thoroughly mixed, three samples of the mixture were taken to estimate spermatozoa number of the pooled sample by means of the optical density technique described by Taneja & Gowe (1961a).…”

“…Sperm motility was assessed as percentage of progressively motile sperms and a drop of the diluted semen was kept on a clean glass slide and cover slip was applied to examine under high power magnification (40×) and was subjectively assessed. The concentration of sperm was estimated by the method described by Taneja and Gowe (1961) using a colorimeter at 540 nm of wavelength. Tetrazolium dye 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction test was carried out in duplicate tubes and absorbance was measured with a colorimeter (CL 157, Elico Ltd, India) at 570 nm according to Hazary et al (2001).…”

“…The optical density was determined at a wavelength of 680 nm (Taneja and Gowe, 1961). The following regression equation was constructed to predict the concentration from optical density readings: /= 0-227 + 11-56 x, r = 0-97 (P < 0-01), RSD = 0-62 where x = optical density, y = number of spermatozoa in 10 6 /mm 3 , r = correlation coefficient and RSD = residual standard deviation.…”
