“…the descendence of free macrophages from blood monocytes, established by van Furth et al (1972) appears to be valid also for the internal male genital system. Earlier statements implying that lymphocytes or derivatives of the basal cells in the epididymal epithelium (Phadke -1964) may be precursors of macrophages (Tjioe and Steinberger -1967) are based on light microscopical analysis of paraffin sections and have not been substantiated in our material analysed by electron microscopy. distally in the excretory ducts.…”

“…Phadke (1964), however, did observe macrophages in the human testis following vasectomy and identified them also in the ejaculate. Tjioe and Steinberger (1967) demonstrated spermatophages in one of the seminiferous tubules in the testis of a 49year old man with apparently normal spermatogenesis. Holstein (1967Holstein ( , 1969 described the ultrastructure of macrophages in the epididymis of healthy men.…”

“…The source of seminal macrophages is still the subject of discussion. Sertoli cells, lymphocytes, and epithelial cells of the ducts have all been implicated as seminal phagocytes (Tjioe & Steinberger, 1967;Carr et al, 1968;Atwal & McFarland, 1971;Tingari & Lake, 1972). Our observation that cultures of testicular cells contained macrophages which morphologically resembled the seminal phagocytes lends support to the hypothesis that seminal phagocytes may also originate in the seminiferous tubules.…”

“…The testicular activities varied in these cattalos depending upon the percentage of bison parentage. The envelope with altered sperms resembled the spermiophages described in the testes and epididymis of sterile men (Phadke and Phadke, 196 1) and as a reaction to extravasation of spermatozoa and to granuloma formation (Tjioe and Steinberger, 1967). 1), no indication of spermatogenesis was apparent.…”
