Sphingomonas oligoaromativorans sp. nov., an oligotrophic bacterium isolated from a forest soil

Abstract: A halo-and organo-sensitive oligotrophic bacterium, designated strain SY-6 T , was isolated from humus forest soil at Gyeryong mountain in Korea. Cells of the strain were Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile rods and the strain formed yellow-pigmented colonies on 100-fold-diluted nutrient broth. Strain SY-6 T grew at pH 6.0-7.0 (optimal growth at pH 7.0), at 10-37 6C(optimal growth at 28 6C) and at salinities of 0-0.5 % (w/v) NaCl, growing optimally at 0.01 % (w/v) NaCl. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene se… Show more

“…The presence of abundant sphingoglycolipid in strain MAH-6 T indicates that the isolate is a member of the family Sphingomonadaceae . The similar major polar lipids were detected in close relatives of the genus Sphingomonas [2–4].…”

“…The major fatty acids of the members of this genus were identified as C 16 : 0 , C 14 : 0 2OH and summed feature 8 (comprising C 18 : 1 ω7 c and/or C 18 : 1 ω6 c ) [2–4]. Species of the genus Sphingomonas were isolated from various sources, including soil [3, 5], water [2, 6], air [5], hospital respirator [7], plant roots [8], plant tissues [9], rice paddy [10] and noni [4]. Isolation and characterization of new species is very important as different bacteria can be used for human welfare [11–13].…”
