Spin-orbit-induced exotic insulators in a three-orbital Hubbard model with(t2g)5electrons

Abstract: On the basis of the multi-orbital dynamical mean field theory, a three-orbital Hubbard model with a relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is studied at five electrons per site. The numerical calculations are performed by employing the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) method based on the strong coupling expansion. We find that appropriately choosing bases, i.e., the maximally spin-orbit-entangled bases, drastically improve the sign problem in the CTQMC calculations, which enables us to treat exactly… Show more

“…As a consequence, a ijm (here we fixed j = 1/2 andj = 3/2). This operator was already introduced in previous literature [35,36]. In our DMRG calculations, and in agreement with [35], we noticed that in the EXI phase the correlation ∆ †jm jm (i)∆j m jm (i ) develops staggered ordering, justifying the staggered sign used below.…”

“…In contrast to previous DMFT studies performed for three degenerate bands [35,36], the four-fold degeneracy of the j ef f = 3/2 bands is here explicitly broken due to the hybridization between the (3/2, ±1/2) and (1/2, ±1/2) states. This is a consequence of a non-cubic crystal-field splitting and specific hopping parameters to resemble iron-based superconductors, as explained before.…”

“…This choice of basis helps to avoid the Monte Carlo sign problem. 18 The reported calculations were performed at the temperature of 290 K. The spectral functions were obtained by analytic continuation of the self-energy using the maximum entropy method 19 .…”

“…The spin-density-wave (SDW) state of iron-pnictide superconductors has sometimes been argued to be of the excitonic origin as well [25][26][27][28] . Finally, an EI state was suggested in a t 2g -orbital system with strong spin-orbit coupling 29 .…”
