Spin-phonon coupling andq-dependence of spin excitations and high-Tcsuperconductivity from band models

Abstract: Spin-phonon coupling ͑SPC͒ has been shown to be compatible with many unusual properties of the high-T c copper oxides. Parameters from ab initio band calculations for unit cells of La 2 CuO 4 are used in a freeelectron-like model in order to study the variation in coupling between spin waves and different phonons. Different SPC for different phonons can explain the "hour-glass" shape of the spin excitations. The model predicts larger q vectors at less doping and rather complex isotope shifts. A link between th… Show more

“…For La along z the values are 0.02 and 17 meV, and the averaged λ for the strongest modes is 0.36. 21 These estimates are of the same order as shown in Table I, but they suggest also that the in-plane movements of the O's can have larger λ.…”

“…The calculated γ from the bare (low-temperature) DOS is about 70 J m −3 K −2 , which leaves room for a large e-ph coupling constant from phonons and/or spin fluctuations. 21 α is the fraction of efficiently coupled modes, R the static reflectivity (R = 0.22 for 1.55 eV in p polarization arriving at 10…”

“…This coupling makes spin waves stronger if they co-exist with phonons of the correct phase and q vector. 19,20 The light O modes are more efficient to enhance the spin waves than the phonons involving heavier elements. Model calculations where the SPC varies with q lead to a spin excitation spectrum quite like what is observed.…”

“…In analogy with phonon displacement amplitudes one can estimate m 2 = k B T /K m as a measure of the amplitude of moment fluctuations. 33 While phonon distortions u always increase with T , in a Fermi liquid framework one expects that magnetic moments m will be quenched at a certain T . 29 This is because of a self-supporting process where m is a function of the exchange splitting ξ .…”
