Spinal Deformities and Advancement in Corrective Orthoses

Abstract: Spinal deformity is an abnormality in the spinal curves and can seriously affect the activities of daily life. The conventional way to treat spinal deformities, such as scoliosis, kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis, is to use spinal orthoses (braces). Braces have been used for centuries to apply corrective forces to the spine to treat spinal deformities or to stabilize the spine during postoperative rehabilitation. Braces have not modernized with advancements in technology, and very few braces are equipped with s… Show more

“…These evolutions complement a better understanding of the importance of a treating team surrounding the patient, including a physician, an orthotist, and a physiotherapist [33]. Progress in bracing includes monitors [9], CAD/CAM technologies, and three-dimensional printing [34]. Also, imaging has changed with the EOS system [35], and ultrasound technology is probably opening a new era in conservative treatment [36].…”

“…Thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO) is the treatment of choice to halt and reverse scoliosis progression [ 66 , 70 ]. This subset of spinal braces most commonly includes Boston, Charleston, Providence, and SpineCor braces [ 56 , 59 ]. Braces differ in being rigid or soft, depending on what materials are used.…”
