Spiral Tool Path Generation Method on Mesh Surfaces Guided by Radial Curves

Abstract: This paper presents a new spiral smoothing method to generate smooth curved tool paths directly on mesh surfaces. Spiral tool paths are preferable for computer numerical control (CNC) milling, especially for high-speed machining. At present, most spiral tool path generation methods aim mainly for pocketing, and a few methods for machining complex surface also suffer from some inherent problems, such as selection of projecting direction, preprocessing of complex offset contours, easily affected by the mesh or m… Show more

“…Machining with 5 or More Axis 5-axis machining, in addition to the X, Y, and Z axes, has two rotary axes, which greatly improves the machining efficiency and accuracy. This process is commonly used to machine blades, rotors, dies, molds and propellers, among others [78][79][80]. As a result, it is considered the most important piece of equipment related to cutting in the industries, which allows the production of final components with much more complex shapes, and which would be impossible to obtain in a 3-or 4-axis machining [81].…”

“…The meshing/reconstructing the surface CAD model from scanned cloud of points and using it for CNC toolpath planning has been used widely for reverse engineering. 1320 However, fitting a parametric surface or constructing a triangular mesh to the point data suffers from limitations like low accuracy, low productivity, and topological problems. 21 To avoid the difficulty, many researchers, worldwide are focusing upon generation of tool path directly from scanned cloud of points without the need for surface fitting/meshing.…”

“…33 Spiral pattern, produces smooth tool path without any sharp-turn and is thus, usually preferred. 20,34 Our earlier work 35 focused on the direct generation of adaptive planar tool paths on point cloud data based on the direction parallel (zigzag) strategy using a 2 D rectangular mesh-grid. For parts geometries having near circular or complex irregular shapes boundaries, such rectangular mesh-based tool paths might not be that efficient.…”
