Spirometric reference values for white European children and adolescents: Polgar revisited

Abstract: We analyzed six spirometric data sets collected in the Netherlands, Austria, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy. The objectives were to establish whether (1) it was possible to describe spirometric indices from childhood to adulthood, taking into account the adolescent growth spurt, and (2) there are systematic differences in ventilatory function between children and adolescents in different parts of Western Europe. The study comprised 2,269 girls and 3,592 boys, aged 6-21 years. The range in standing height… Show more

“…Subjects were prepped with electrodes for continuous monitoring with a 12-lead electrocardiogram (MAX 1, SensorMedics Corp.) and fitted with a nose clip and mouthpiece assembly for measurement of oxygen uptake (VO 2 ) and carbon dioxide production by open-circuit spirometry (SensorMedics V max ). Variables measured included VO 2 , carbon dioxide, heart rate, blood pressure (BP), respiratory exchange ratio, and spirometry parameters (27).…”

“…Values were expressed as % of predicted based on published reference data (31), and considered to be abnormal if below the 5 th percentile (32,33). Total lung capacity (TLC) and residual volume (RV) were determined from body plethysmography and expressed as a ratio (RV/TLC).…”
