Splenic artery aneurysm in obstetrical patients: A series of four cases with different clinical presentation and outcome

Abstract: Splenic artery aneurysms (SAA) are defined as more than 1-cm pathologic dilation of the splenic artery. They are the most common type of visceral arterial aneurysms, accounting for approximately 60% of the diagnoses. 1In contrast to other types of arterial aneurysms, SAA are found more frequently in women than in men, with a 4:1 female to male ratio. Of note, 58% of SSA are diagnosed in women of childbearing age. 1 Splenic artery aneurysms are usually asymptomatic or cause nonspecific, mild abdominal symptoms … Show more

“…Imaging by CT or MRI in hemodynamically stable patients can allow not only prompt diagnosis of SHiP but also provide additional information regarding the bleeding site. Thus facilitating differential diagnosis with other SHiP-associated life-threatening conditions, such as the first stage of splenic artery aneurysm rupture, 8,13,14 and allowing for adequate and timely intervention to ensure optimal outcomes. In our series, we performed three emergency surgeries without further radiological assessment other than ultrasound because of fetal bradycardia (cases n.IV, V) and hypovolemic shock (case n.VI).…”

“…12 ) to assess ascites, portal vein thrombosis, and new or growing focal lesions. Spontaneous rupture of a splenic artery aneurysm is a rare event found in 0.00001–0.003% of cases [ 89 ]. Maternal and fetal survival is 26% in the mother and 50% in the fetus and depends on a rapid diagnosis and effective treatment.…”

“…Maternal and fetal survival is 26% in the mother and 50% in the fetus and depends on a rapid diagnosis and effective treatment. It mainly occurs in the second half of pregnancy or during labor [ 89 , 90 ]. Pregnancy, hyperdynamic circulation, and hormone-induced alterations of the arterial walls are contributing factors.…”
