Splitting rules for graceful degradation of user interfaces

Abstract: This paper presents a series of new algorithms for paginating interaction spaces (i.e.; windows, dialog boxes, web pages…) based on a multi-layer specification in a user interface description language. We first describe how an interaction space can be split using information from the presentation layer (Concrete User Interface). We then demonstrate how information from higher levels of abstraction (Abstract User Interface, Task model) can be used to produce a pagination that is more meaningful from the task's … Show more

“…Scaling a meta-UI to the context of use goes beyond adapting its user interface to screen resolutions of heterogeneous devices and their interaction modalities, a topic that is already discussed extensively in literature [15,19,7]. Adapting the meta-UI also encompasses many other factors from which we highlight two important ones based on our experiences:…”

“…Instead, an attempt will be made to extend the Gummy tool to enable the integration of multiple transformation engines. This would allow the use of existing, more sophisticated techniques such as Supple [11], Artistic Resizing [7] or graceful degradation [10]. Designers would then be able to try out several transformation engines to generate an initial design and pick the one they like best.…”

“…It was not an aim of the present work to contribute to developments in this area but the transformation engine was implemented to prove the utility of the design approach presented in this paper. Similar but more sophisticated techniques for adapting user interfaces include Supple [11], splitting rules for graceful degradation [10] and Artistic Resizing [7]. Each of these techniques require other types of input to steer the adaptation and are solely used at runtime.…”

“…Nevertheless, in most of the systems providing adaptation, these rules are design in ad-hoc manner [3]. Therefore, most of these systems are using what we call hardcoded adaptation techniques.…”
