Spoken dialogue technology

Abstract: Spoken dialogue systems allow users to interact with computer-based applications such as databases and expert systems by using natural spoken language. The origins of spoken dialogue systems can be traced back to Artificial Intelligence research in the 1950s concerned with developing conversational interfaces. However, it is only within the last decade or so, with major advances in speech technology, that large-scale working systems have been developed and, in some cases, introduced into commercial environment… Show more

“…In a spoken language system, the speech recognizer output is typically handed to a language understanding component to convert the string of words, possibly including errors, into a semantic representation [13]. At this stage, some of the errors are corrected or dropped; the language understanding component may ignore words that do not appear to contribute to the meaning of a sentence.…”

“…Conversational interfaces [86,94,105,113,118] have been proven useful for providing the general public with access to telemedicine services, promoting patients' involvement in their own care, assisting in health care delivery, and improving patient outcome [19]. Bickmore and Giorgino define these systems as being "those automated systems whose primary goal is to provide health communication with patients or consumers primarily using natural language dialog" [19].…”

“…Thus, it is important to identify which modality or combination of modalities would be optimal to present the information and interact with the user. To do so, in the last years there has been an increasing interest in simulating human-to-human communication, including the so-called conversational agents in multi-agents system [8]. There is a high variety of applications in which conversational agents can be used, one of the most wide-spread of which is information retrieval.…”
