Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC) enthesitis index in turkish patients with ankylosing spondylitis: Relationship with disease activity and quality of life

Abstract: The clinical assessment of enthesitis in AS is an important outcome measure, and enthesitis indexes such as SPARCC enthesitis index can be valuable tools in the evaluation of disease activity in AS patients not receiving anti-TNF therapy.

“…However, in our early axial SpA cohort, the main peripheral manifestation associated with disability was enthesitis (the association with peripheral arthritis was only significant in the univariable models). The association between disability and enthesitis had previously been described in patients with AS but not in early axial SpA (31,32). Both TNFi and NSAID treatment emerged as third-level predictors of disability in the decision tree model, but not treatment with cDMARDs.…”

“…The patients in these studies had increased pain compared with the other subtypes of juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Given the fact that pain is an important component of the quality of life, it is not surprising that these 2 ERA studies, as well as others, showed worse quality of life in patients with enthesitis compared with patients who did not have it .…”

“…In SpA patients with enthesitis, a significantly higher frequency of tender and swollen joint counts as well as more inflammatory axial symptoms have been found . Studies in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients revealed a correlation between enthesitis and higher disease activity (measured by the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index [BASDAI]) .…”

“…The presence of swollen and/or tender joints was investigated with detailed history and physical examination, and patients with arthritis were excluded from the study. Patients and HCs were evaluated by the Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC), and enthesis points with tenderness were determined and recorded for each participant 21 . US was performed on selected enthesis areas in both groups.…”
