Spontaneous Emergence of Self-Replicating Molecules Containing Nucleobases and Amino Acids

Abstract: The conditions that led to the formation of the first organisms and the ways that life originates from a lifeless chemical soup are poorly understood. The recent hypothesis of “RNA-peptide coevolution” suggests that the current close relationship between amino acids and nucleobases may well have extended to the origin of life. We now show how the interplay between these compound classes can give rise to new self-replicating molecules using a dynamic combinatorial approach. We report two strategies for the fabr… Show more

“…The first 24 hours revealed a mixture of differently sized mixed building block macrocycles (Figure 1 b), however, after 7 days, the DCL was dominated by two major species: cyclic trimer (1 b) 2 2 1 and foldamer 2 15 , Figure 1. UPLC analysis reveals a) a complex, mixed DCL made from building blocks 1 a (1.0 mM) and 2 (1.0 mM), published previously; [14] b) a DCL of macrocycles after 36 hours upon combining 1 b (1.0 mM) and 2 (1.0 mM); c) self-sorting into two distinct species (1 b) 2…”

“…A person is an independent agent at the meter scale. A cell is an independent agent at the micrometer scale, and so on down to the molecular and atomic levels [58,[172][173][174][175][176]. Moving in the opposite direction, the random and intrinsic fluctuations at scales below a given Markov blanket are progressively suppressed [32].…”

“…A key step in the origin of life is the formation of a metabolic network that is both self-sustaining and collectively autocatalytic (Arsène et al, 2018;Hayden et al, 2008;Liu et al, 2020;Vaidya et al, 2012;Vasas et al, 2012;Xavier et al, 2020). Systems that combine these two general properties have been studied within a formal framework that is sometimes referred to as RAF theory (Hordijk & Steel, 2017).…”
