Spontaneous Physical Activity Defends Against Obesity

Abstract: Spontaneous physical activity (SPA) is physical activity not motivated by a rewarding goal, such as that associated with food-seeking or wheel running behavior. SPA is often thought of as only “fidgeting”, but that is a mischaracterization, since fidgety behavior can be linked to stereotypies in neurodegenerative disease and other movement disorders. Instead, SPA should be thought of as all physical activity behavior that emanates from an unconscious drive for movement. An example of this may be restless behav… Show more

“…More physical activities can decrease body weight. One related study supported the finding that all physical activity burns calories, including spontaneous physical activity, which could be manipulated to burn calories, defend against weight gain and reduce excess adiposity [25]. Surprisingly, young adults with high education levels are more likely to gain more weight than those with lower education levels.…”

“…This suggests that triggered lipogenesis based on the mTOR-SREBPB1 signaling pathway may constitute a significant part of the molecular mechanism underlying genetically determined high BMR, which acts as a compensatory mechanism lowering propensity to the detrimental effects of western-type diet and sedentary lifestyle. 12 16 45 Conversely, a reduction in metabolic rate may stimulate weight gain, excess adiposity, and favor the development of IR and T2D.…”

“…The epidemic of obesity and its comorbidities represents an increasingly worrisome medical and economic burden according to WHO reports [1]. Several strategies are available for weight loss and maintenance, such as the modification of lifestyle (diet and physical activity), pharmacology and surgery [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Many dietary patterns have been proposed throughout the years, and although several authors tried to determine what was best, it is now acknowledged that there is no optimal choice for each patient both efficacy-and safety-wise, and the treatment should be tailored to the needs, habits, and clinical condition [10].…”
