Spontaneous Pinealoma in a Male Crj:CD(SD)IGS Rat.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. A pinealoma (benign) was found in a 61-week-old male Crj:CD (SD) IGS rat. The neoplasm was located between the cerebral hemispheres and the cerebellum. Histologically, the tumor cells consisted of two cell types: large, pale-staining cells and small darkstaining cells. A fibrovascular stroma divided the tumor cells into incomplete lobules or nest structures. Relatively numerous mitoses were noted in the tumor cells. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells contained dense-cored vesicles, approximately 120 … Show more

“…Tumors of Pineal Gland Among laboratory animals, pinealoma has been described in rats but is extremely rare. Single cases were reported in aged rats of different strains including Crj:CD (SD) IGS (Furukawa et al 1999), WIST (Yamamoto et al 1991), F344 (Heath and Winokur 1998), and Osborne-Mendel (Dagle et al 1979).…”

“…The expansive growth of tumor cells in the dorsal surface of the brain is also a biological feature of pinealomas in rats, even when the tumor is malignant 8 . In previous reports, the tumor masses were visible on the dorsal surface of the brain 9,[11][12][13][14] . However, unlike these previous reports of spontaneous pinealomas in rats, the present tumor occurred in the deep brain parenchyma and grew to a large mass invading the brain parenchyma.…”

“…In humans, germinoma, formerly called pinealoma, has a unique feature of two cell patterns composed of large tumor cells and small infiltrated lymphocytes 6 . In contrast, pinealomas in rats derived from parenchymal cells of the pineal gland are reportedly composed of large and small tumor cells 9,10,12,13 .…”
