Spontaneous pulverisation of Al4C3containing MAX bulk ceramics at room temperature

Abstract: The deleterious effect of Al 4 C 3 on the performance of MAX ceramics has not attracted much attention. In the present study, Al 4 C 3 containing Cr 2 Al(Si)C and SiC/Cr 2 AlC ceramics have been prepared. It was found that spontaneous pulverisation of the as synthesised samples took place at room temperature after exposure in air and water for various durations. Volume expansion induced by the interaction of Al 4 C 3 with moisture is held responsible for the disintegration of Al 4 C 3 containing MAX ceramics. … Show more

“…All the alloys that had decrepitated within 1 year contained Al 4 C 3 . This carbide is known to react with water to form solid Al hydroxide and gaseous methane (equation ( 1)), and this promotes the decrepitation of the material [16,17],…”

“…MAX ceramics are a group of layered ternary ceramics, which have received special attentions over the last decades. [1][2][3][4][5] Among these MAX ceramics, titanium silicon carbide (Ti 3 SiC 2 ) exhibits a surprising combination of the properties of both metals and ceramics, such as relative low density, high strength and toughness, good thermal and electrical conductivities and excellent resistance to thermal shock and oxidation below 1300uC, which make it distinctive compared with conventional ceramics. [6][7][8][9][10] Above all, Ti 3 SiC 2 ceramic also possesses good machinability and can be machined using conventional tools, 11,12 which is of great technological importance.…”

“…However, since Al 4 C 3 is hygroscopic and dissolves in water at room temperature [43] it is reasonable to assume that it dissolved during the water-based polishing procedure. Note that EDS analysis of cross-sectional SEM micrographs clearly show that some Al-rich regions were comprised of pure Al; others were found to contain substantial amounts of C with Al/C ratios that varied between 1.0 and 1.9.…”
