Spontaneous regression of cervical lymph node metastasis in a patient with mesopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue: possible association between apoptosis and tumor regression

Abstract: Our case may be the first case of squamous cell carcinoma undergoing spontaneous regression in which enhanced apoptosis was demonstrated quantitatively. The findings were considered to contribute to evidence of spontaneous regression in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck resulting from enhanced apoptosis.

“…The literature thus supports the idea that this phenomenon remains extremely rare in head and neck cancer . After these review articles were published, there has been one report of spontaneous regression of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue with lymph node metastases . However, our patient receiving AgNP would, to the best of our knowledge, be the first reported case of spontaneous regression of head and neck cancer involving distant metastases.…”

“…Moreover, metastatic cells that eventually reach the lymph nodes (which are highly active sites of the immune system), in addition to being partially blocked, markedly stimulate the immune system. Cases of spontaneous regression of lymph node metastases of carcinoma have been reported (28).…”

“…Inflammation, sometimes triggered by an acute infection, has also been implicated in regression of metastatic disease 40 . Complete regression of widespread metastases in the absence of any relevant treatment has been reported in a wide variety of neoplasms, ranging from squamous‐cell carcinoma of the skin and mucous membranes to hepatocellular carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma and from seminoma to Merkel cell carcinoma 41–45 . In melanoma, the incidence of spontaneous regression of metastases has been estimated to be one per 400 patients 35 …”
