Spontaneous regression of multiple pulmonary nodules in a patient with unclassified renal cell carcinoma following laparoscopic partial nephrectomy: A case report

Abstract: Spontaneous regression of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is rare, but well-documented in clear cell RCC. However, there are no reports on spontaneous regression of unclassified RCC. Since the radiological findings of pulmonary infarcts and inflammatory pseudotumors are similar to those of metastases from RCC, a definitive diagnosis is difficult without performing a histological examination. A 56-year-old woman underwent medical examination by a physician. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revea… Show more

“…As it was observed for other cancers, 9 spontaneous regressions of lung metastases have been reported in patients with GTN following surgical excision of the primary uterine tumor (personal communication presented at the World Congress of GTD 2015). This indicates abrogation of the cancer's immune tolerance and, potentially, alloantigenspecific T-cell reactivation.…”

“…Almost half of the patients, who did not receive drug therapies for mRCC, deceased during 90 days after nephrectomy. However, single patients had excellent prognosis after cytoreductive nephrectomy only, which may be explained by spontaneous regression of the metastases [19][20][21], or incorrect radiological diagnosis of mRCC. Cytoreductive nephrectomy is major surgery especially in locally advanced cases, and the patients should fit well for surgery.…”

“…In our patient, the corrected serum calcium level was 10.0 mg/dl before surgery and 10.3 mg/dl 1 week after surgery, indicating that her condition was very close to intermediate risk. Although it is very rare, spontaneous regression of metastatic renal cell carcinoma has been reported [11,12]. Noninfectious pneumonitis is typical in patients with temsirolimus treatment and sometimes the treatment is discontinued because of this adverse event, which occurs in 6-30 % patients undergoing this treatment [2, 5-7, 10, 13].…”
