Spontaneous remission of acute leukemia after the termination of pregnancy

Abstract: A 28-year-old woman in the third trimester of her pregnancy was found to have acute myelocytic leukemia. The baby was delivered by Cesarean section and her leukemia underwent spontaneous remission. However, 3 months later, she presented with massive painful leukemic infiltration of the breasts as initial manifestation of relapse, followed by systemic symptoms of leukemia. In vitro culture of the leukemic cells demonstrated characteristics of macrophage cell line. This case illustrates a unique sequence of even… Show more

“…Spontaneous remission of acute myeloid leukemia is almost always transient event, with a mean duration in the literature of 7.7 months (range 1-36) [14]. In a typical case of spontaneous remission the full restoration of normal hematopoiesis and disappearance of blast cells occur in patient with acute leukemia and concurrent infection [2,7,12,16,23,27,31,32,33,36,45], blood transfusion [2,14,25,36,38] or cytokine injection [19,44]. The underlying molecular mechanisms of spontaneous remission are still unknown.…”

“…Preleukemia : Another special situation is represented by myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) diagnosed during pregnancy. Indeed, an association has been suggested between myelodysplasia and pregnancy, and a few cases of spontaneous remissions have been observed after the termination of pregnancy . However, in these cases, the disease rapidly recurred and patients subsequently died.…”
