Spontaneous Resolution of Optic Disk Pit Maculopathy in a Child After a Six-Year Follow-Up

Abstract: Purpose: Optic disk pit (ODP) is a rare congenital abnormality of the optic nerve head that can lead to a maculopathy characterized mainly by serous retinal detachment. Optic disk pit maculopathy (ODP-M) in children is rare, and at present, the best management is still unknown. Long-lasting ODP-M can lead to organic amblyopia and photoreceptor damage, whereas surgical treatments are invasive and have an uncertain prognosis. We present a case of spontaneous resolution of ODP-M in a child who was monitored morph… Show more

“…A conservative approach with closer follow-up should be advocated as reported earlier in children. 18,19 Optic disc pits are classically small and most commonly located temporally as noted in this series. The fluid from the disc pit first accumulates within the retinal stroma, most predominantly in the outer plexiform layer.…”

“…Maculopathy is a well described condition occurring in 25–75% of patients with ODP and being responsible for significant vision loss in up to 65% of the patients [ 1 , 4 , 9 11 ]. Macular changes described are serous detachment, cystoid degeneration, degenerative pigmentary changes and macular schisis [ 1 , 6 8 , 12 ]. Even though some reports describe spontaneous resolution in about 25% of patients, the majority have a poor visual prognosis with 80% of patients reporting a visual acuity of 20/200 or worse [ 4 , 6 , 7 , 13 ].…”
