Spontaneous symmetry breaking in the S 3-symmetric scalar sector

Abstract: We present a detailed study of the vacua of the S 3 -symmetric three-Higgsdoublet potential, specifying the region of parameters where these minimisation solutions occur. We work with a CP conserving scalar potential and analyse the possible real and complex vacua with emphasis on the cases in which the CP symmetry can be spontaneously broken. Results are presented both in the reducible-representation framework of Derman, and in the irreducible-representation framework. Mappings between these are given. Some o… Show more

“…In this paper, we revisit the different vacuum solutions for the S 3 -symmetric potential with three Higgs doublets which were studied previously in Ref. [16]. The S 3 -symmetric scalar sector with three Higgs doublets was studied in the past by several authors, starting in 1977 by Pakvasa and Sugawara [17] who worked with irreducible representations consisting of a doublet and singlet of S 3 and also analyzed couplings to fermions.…”

“…In Ref. [16], special attention was paid to the possibility of having spontaneous CP violation. However, it was also pointed out that several potentially interesting vacua led to the existence of massless scalars [16,20].…”

“…A complete list of possible global minima for the A 4 , S 4 , ∆ (27) and ∆(54) Higgs potentials with 3 Higgs fields has been obtained by [40], which includes furthermore cases without irreducible triplets such as S 3 (the S 3 is itself studied in great detail in [41]). For the cases where the respective potential is CP conserving in general (e.g.…”
