“…Yet, to date, the majority of studies examining sport participation for this population have focused on fitness and physical health outcomes (Draheim et al., 2002; Grandisson, Tetreault, & Freeman, 2012). Recently, however, some studies have described belonging as a psychosocial benefit of sport participation for refugee populations (Petersen et al., 2019; Walseth, 2006), trauma survivors (Massey & Williams, 2020), and individuals with mobility limitations (Côté‐Leclerc et al., 2017).…”

“…We adopted an interpretivist approach to this meta-synthesis whereby we understand primary qualitative research as a construction, and secondary research as a construction of a construction (Paterson et al, 2001). We also acknowledge that our interpretation of findings will be influenced by our own academic background (Massey & Williams, 2020). For example, the authors are experienced in qualitative research synthesis, as well as research and practice related to anti-doping.…”

“…Furthermore, in line with the specific method of thematic synthesis, we did not critically examine the philosophical, theoretical and historical trends within the extant literature. Future studies may wish to draw upon other methods of synthesis such as metastudy to investigate the process of research (see Paterson et al, 2001;Massey & Williams, 2020). Here, a critical examination of underpinning theory, methodological procedures and construction of findings has the potential to further conceptually advance the field of clean sport.…”

“…More recently, a scoping review examining sport-based health promotion interventions performed in African countries identified only two experimental studies but, mental health benefits postintervention were not clear (Hansell, Giacobbi Jr, & Voelker, 2020). Several articles hypothetized possible benefits from sport interventions for youths during or post-extreme situation (Kalaf & Plante, 2019;Massey & Williams, 2020).…”
