Spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi) is attracted to vittatalactone, the pheromone of striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma vittatum)

Abstract: Spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi; also known as southern corn rootworm) is a pest feeding on many crops, including cucurbits, corn (maize), peanuts, beans, and other crops and wild plants in North America. On cucurbit crops, where it co-occurs with striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma vittatum), both are key pests that vector Erwinia tracheiphila, a destructive pathogen that causes bacterial wilt. Here we deployed synthetic vittatalactone, the male-produced aggregation pheromone of A. v… Show more

“…The spotted cucumber beetle as well as the squash bug ( Anasa tristis (De Geer), Hemiptera: Coreidae) and horned squash bug ( Anasa armigera (Say)), are also attracted to synthetic vittatalactone. This is a true cross-species attraction as shown by the attraction of all 3 nontarget species to the host-plant-feeding male striped cucumber beetles ( A. vittatum ) that produce the natural pheromone (Brzozowski et al 2022, Weber et al 2022a, Haber et al 2023). This cross-species attraction provides a unique opportunity to use traps baited with vittatalactone to simultaneously manage all of these key cucurbit pests in commercial crops.…”
