Spread of SARS-CoV-2 Infections in Educational Settings by Level of Education, Taking into Account the Predominant Virus Variant

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected educational settings (ES) in Slovenia. To effectively limit the emergence and spread of SARS-CoV-2 infections in ES, it is important to identify the pathways of introduction and transmission of infection. This study aims to analyse the spread of infections in ES according to the level of education, taking into account the predominant variant of the virus in Slovenia in order to advise on public health action. We calculated the incidence rate of infection by age gro… Show more

“…(Alpha) variant emergence, and so they do not apply to new, more transmissible variants of SARS-CoV-2. During autumn 2021, when the Delta variant was predominant in Europe, Galičič et al, 31 who monitored the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in childcare and educational facilities, found more outbreaks in those settings compared to earlier variants. However, at this pandemic stage, when community transmission was high, it was not easy to state whether transmission occurred in childcare and educational settings or elsewhere.…”

“…However, indoor air quality has also influenced the spread of SARS-CoV-2. As reported by Galičič et al [8], non-pharmacological measures such as self-testing, hygiene, and ventilation should be used if the pandemic slows down. All this shows once again how different factors and hazards in sanitation are interconnected and should not be neglected in decision making (Figure 1).…”
