Spring Bird Migration Phenology in Eilat, Israel

Abstract: Analysis of the mean date of fi rst captures and median arrival dates of spring migration for 34 species of birds at Eilat, Israel, revealed that the earlier a species migrates through Eilat, the greater is the inter-annual variation in the total time of its passage. Birds arrive during spring migration in Eilat in four structured and independent waves. Th e annual fl uctuation in the initial arrival dates (initial capture dates) and median dates (median date of all captures), not including recaptures, did not… Show more

“…In agreement with previous studies in Poland 85 and in Eilat, Israel 95 , we did not detect any change in the arrival timing of the barred warbler at the stopover site during spring migration. The arrival day of barred warbler was also independent of spatial and temporal availability of resources during the pre-migratory period (measured as EVI).…”

“…The changes in phenology we observed in the steppe eagle follow changes in very early passerines (Yosef & Markovets 2009), which may be an important part of the diet of migrating eagles (Yosef 1996). However, we do not believe that lack of food during migration could be so strong a driver to advance the date of migration so much (44 d over 15 yr for the first passage bird).…”

“…Another asset of the 'Arava is its hosting much research and education. In situ institutes include the 'Arava Institute (Shanas et al 2006;Kalman 2013), bird study centres (Leshem et al 2009) at Hazeva (Zahavi 1990;Katsir 1995), Lotan and Elat (Yosef and Tryjanowski 2009;Yosef and Markovets 2009) and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority's Hai-Bar acclimation station. Many student theses investigate the 'Arava (e.g.…”
