Spring Ichthyoplankton Assemblage Structure in the Yangtze Estuary Under Environmental Factors

Abstract: Estuaries, where fresh and salty water converge, provide abundant nutrients for ichthyoplankton. Ichthyoplankton, including fish eggs, larvae, and juveniles, are important fishery recruitment resources. The Yangtze Estuary and its adjacent waters comprise a typical large-scale estuary and supply many important fish spawning, feeding, and breeding areas. In this study, 1,291 ichthyoplankton individuals were collected in the Yangtze Estuary in spring, from 2013 to 2020. The aims of the study were to provide deta… Show more

“…In short, the impact of pH on reproductive processes is not well understood now, but it has been observed to induce spawning in certain ichthyoplankton. In addition, salinity, temperature, and Chl-a are also considered as the major factors that affect the ichthyoplankton communities [5,16,44,45]. Salinity and temperature mainly affect fish reproductive activity, the spatial and temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton, and the assemblage structures [46,47].…”

“…This is closely related to the effects of high-intensity fishing and changes in the offshore marine environment on fish spawning and bait grounds in the last decade [7,23]. The ichthyoplankton assemblage in the Yangtze Estuary has also declined from 94 species in the 1980s to 26 species in 2013-2020, and the replenishment capacity of the fishery resources has decreased substantially [24,25]. Tropical and subtropical estuaries have higher species richness than temperate systems [26].…”
