Squamotransitional Cell Carcinoma of the Vagina: Diagnosis and Clinical Management

Abstract: Primary squamotransitional cell carcinoma (STCC) is rare squamous cell tumor variant resembling transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary tract. STCC occurs rarely in the vagina and its clinical and pathological correlates are poorly known. We report a unique case of a 66-year-old Italian woman with STCC of the vagina. A biopsy of the tumor was performed. The tumor qualified as a STCC. Following biopsy, the patient underwent radical hysterectomy (Piver's III-type) with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, u… Show more

“…Our data support the statement by Patrelli TS et al [18] that leading factors for the diagnosis are the morphology and cytoarchitectural features of this type of tumor. The morphological findings are consistent with mitotically active tumors with solid and/or inverted papillary growth patterns, composed of polygonal cells demonstrating transitional cell features (with hyperchromatic, oval, grooved nuclei and a relatively small amount of cytoplasm) showing focal squamous differentiation.…”

“…However, few cases of vaginal TCC that occur synchronously or metachronously with non-muscle invasive TCC of the urinary tract have been described (9,10). In addition, the extremely rare entity of primary vaginal TCC in the absence of a urinary tract tumor has also been reported (11)(12)(13). The pathogeneses of these variable clinical scenarios appear to be varied; however, the small number of cases in each group renders establishing the pathogenesis challenging.…”
