Background: A relatively underestimated facet of infectious diseases is the association of chronic bacterial and parasitic infections with cancer development. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the evidence regarding the association of such infections with the development of malignancy, excluding the overwhelming evidence of the association of Helicobacter pylori and cancer. Methodology: We searched Pubmed, Cochrane, and Scopus without time limits for relevant articles. Results: There is evidence that some bacterial and parasitic infections are associated with cancer development. The level of evidence of this association varies from high to low; in any case, a long time interval is mandatory for the development of cancer. A high level of evidence exists for the association of Salmonella Typhi with gallbladder and hepatobiliary carcinoma; Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis with cholangiocarcinoma; Schistosoma hematobium with bladder cancer; chronic osteomyelitis with squamous cell carcinoma of the skin; and hidradenitis suppurativa with squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. In contrast, the level of evidence regarding the association of Chlamydia spp. with cancer is low. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is associated with lung cancer, albeit probably not etiopathogenetically. Conclusions: A considerable number of bacterial infections and parasitic infections are associated with the development of cancer. Further research into recognizing additional associations of bacterial and parasitic infections with cancer is mandatory.

La maladie de Verneuil ou l'hidrosadénite suppurative est une affection naissant dans les glandes sudoripares apocrines. Le diagnostic est souvent fait au stade de chronicité. La recherche d'autres localisations doit être systé-matique. Le traitement est essentiellement chirurgical et astreignant, consistant en des excisions larges et parfois répétées. La récidive est fréquente. Notre étude rétrospective concerne 40 cas de maladie de Verneuil, tous de sexe masculin avec un âge moyen de 32 ans. La clinique était dominée par la présence de plusieurs fistules au niveau de la région périanale. Le traitement était chirurgical par des exérèses larges associées à des soins locaux quotidiens. Les résultats étaient satisfaisants, et le délai de cicatrisation variait entre 45 et 60 jours. Le recul était de dix ans, et on avait noté sept récidives opérées par la même technique avec de bons résultats. The diagnosis is often made after some chronic episodes. Search for other locations in the body must be systematic. The treatment is essentially surgical and constrained, consisting of large excisions, and sometimes repeated. Recurrence is common. Our study is based on 40 cases of Verneuil's disease, all male, whose average age is 32 years. Clinical examination was dominated by the presence of several fistulas in the perianal region. Treatment was surgical, associated with large excisions, requiring daily local care. Results were satisfactory and the time for scar tissue development varied between 45 and 60 days. Thefollow-up was of one to ten years and we noted seven cases of recurrence, operated using the same technique and with good results.
