Squamous cell skin cancer in the North-west of England, 1967-69, and its relation to occupation

Abstract: During the three years 1967-69, 781 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin were reported to the Manchester Regional Cancer Registry. The proportions of males to females were significantly different (p < 0 001) among the skin cancer sites. The age-specific incidence rates were significantly different (p < 0-001) between the sexes for the five-year age groups of 55 years and above. Full occupational histories were obtained on 598 (77 %) patients; a further 148 (19 %) patients gave one main occupation only,… Show more

“…The values of α and β were estimated from published incidence of skin cancer data and ambient UV measurements. The values published (5) for α and β were 3.2 and 1.7, respectively, for BCC and 5.1 and 2.3 for SCC, respectively, being the mean values obtained from several epidemiological studies carried out in USA, Europe and Australia (17–26). This model was validated (5) by comparing the calculated age standardised rates with the observed rates (7) for three latitude regions in Australia.…”

“…The position in relation to squamous and basal cell carcinomas of the skin is more straightforward in that nonmelanomatous skin cancer is clearly more common in people who work outdoors (14,22). It is uncertain how many cases in Britain are attributable to outdoor work, but such tumors are relatively common in the general population.…”
