Square-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet at Very Large Correlation Lengths

Abstract: The correlation length of the square-lattice spin-1͞2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is studied in the lowtemperature (asymptotic-scaling) regime. Our novel approach combines a very efficient loop cluster algorithm-operating directly in the Euclidean time continuum-with finite-size scaling. This enables us to probe correlation lengths up to j ഠ 350 000 lattice spacings, more than 3 orders of magnitude larger than in any previous study. We resolve a conundrum concerning the applicability of asymptoticscaling formul… Show more

“…This is far outside of the temperature range where the QNLσM-RC theory should hold. A plausible explanation for this unexpected agreement has been given by Beard et al [13] In spite of the fact that the progenitor of this work was the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in La 2−x Ba x CuO 4 [3] together with the early work on the 2D spin correlations in La 2 CuO 4+y [5], our…”

“…This has, in fact, been confirmed in detail experimentally [10]; specifically, over a wide range of length scales the 2D correlation length measured in Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 agrees quantitatively with results from quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations carried out on the Hamiltonian Eq. (1) with S=1/2 [12][13][14]. The value for J for Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 listed in Table (1) is deduced from two magnon Raman scattering measurements [15].…”

“…Calculations of this type have a long history [15] for the two-dimensional Heisenberg model, yielding lim N →∞ m st = 0.3070(3) [16,30] for the square lattice. The finite size effects of the staggered magnetization are very large as compared to, e.g.…”

“…In particular open questions still exist [13][14][15][16] on the low-temperature region, where the spin correlation length becomes of the order of 10 2 lattice spacings and the real magnets are seen to develop macroscopic areas of correlated spins.…”
