Square Root Module to Combat Dispersion-Induced Nonlinear Distortion in Radio-Over-Fiber Systems

Abstract: Abstract-Reduced dispersion-induced harmonics levels are reported for analogue radio-over-fiber systems by using a linearized receiver incorporating a memoryless electronic circuit with square root (SQRT)-like transfer function, and performing amplitude modulation (AM) at the transmitter. A practical implementation demonstrates the effectiveness of the AM-SQRT approach in linearizing the optical transmission system with respect to the conventional intensity modulation and direct detection system. “…In terms of the field, the signal is modulated in intensity although it is desirable to have it modulated in field amplitude. Because of that, in analogue SCM, the optimum results with the SQRT are obtained when a real amplitude modulation (AM) is applied instead of intensity modulation (IM) as it is explained in Prat et al (2006).…”

“…In Prat et al (2005Prat et al ( , 2006Prat et al ( , 2007 radio over fibre (RoF) experiments have been carried out by using an electrical module that approximates the SQRT response. With the SQRT in a RoF system, the transmitted distance is considerably increased, to have the same levels of second, and third harmonics respectively, as compared with the case of no equalization.…”

“…A linear distortion such as chromatic dispersion in optical field is converted into nonlinear distortion after square-law detection at the receiver, which reduce the effectiveness of linear equalization [9]. The square root module (SRM) device, added after photodiode to compensate for square-law behavior, improves linear equalizer performance and thus makes it chromatic dispersion resilient [10][11][12].…”

“…Radio-over-fiber (ROF) transport systems have the potential to offer large transmission capacity, significant mobility and flexibility, as well as economic advantage due to its broad bandwidth and low attenuation characteristics [1][2][3][4]. The design of microwave signal generation plays an important role for the successful deployment in fullduplex ROF transport systems.…”
