Sr-Nd-Pb Isotopic compositions of the Neogene Eolian Deposits in the Xining Basin and Implications for Their Dust Sources

Abstract: The Neogene eolian deposits in the Xining Basin are valuable archive for studying the evolution of the Asian monsoon system and geomorphic processes of Northwest China. The Neogene eolian deposits that paleomagnetically dated at about 14 Ma probably were sourced from the middle and west Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) as indicated by elemental compositions and magnetic properties. This study provides the Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic ratios of different sediments (gravels from the river terraces, Neogene eolian deposits and… Show more

“…Many approaches have been used to determine the sediment provenance of Chinese loess, for example, isotopic (Sr, Nd, Pb) compositions (Gallet et al, 1996; Sun, 2002a, 2005; Rao et al, 2006; Chen et al, 2007; Sun and Zhu, 2010; Zeng et al, 2015), zircon U-Pb ages (Stevens et al, 2010, 2013; Che and Li, 2013; Fenn et al, 2017; Sun et al, 2018), mineralogical methods (Xie and Ding, 2007; Stevens et al, 2013; Wang et al, 2019), and chemical (major and trace elements) characteristics (Zhang et al, 1996; Gallet et al, 1998; Guan et al, 2008; Feng et al, 2011).…”

“…Crustal residence ages (T DM ) may be calculated employing diverse models of depleted mantle evolution (AlbarĂšde & Brouxel, ; Ben Othman, PolvĂ©, & AllĂšgre, ; Blichert‐Toft & AlbarĂšde, ; DePaolo, ; Goldstein, O'Nions, & Hamilton, ; Liew & Hofmann, ; McCulloch, ; Su et al, ; Zeng, Liang, Peng, Yu, & Xiang, ). In this study, the T DM1 and T DM2 (representing single‐ and two‐stage Nd model ages, respectively) calculated according to the depleted mantle model of DePaolo () are presented in Table .…”

“…Given the small variations in the natural 143 Nd/ 144 Nd ratios, the measured values of the samples are generally expressed as units ɛ, where: ɛNd (0) = [( 143 Nd/ 144 Nd measured / 0.512638) -l] × 10 4 . The unit ɛ represents the deviation of the 143 Nd/ 144 Nd of the sample from the value of the Chondritic Uniform Reservoir (CHUR), the present value of which is estimated at 0.512638 (Zeng & al., 2015). Measurements of Sm and Nd concentrations as well as calculations of the isotopic ratios of Sm in the static mode were also carried out in order to validate the correlation between Sm and Nd.…”
