The paper analyzes the circumstances under which Bruno Bettelheim's (1903–1990) well‐known paper, “Individual and Mass Behavior in Extreme Situations” (1943) came to be written and discusses its central arguments. The authors compare Bettelheim's analysis of the Nazi concentration camps with the interpretations of other authors, particularly those who had experienced the camps themselves, and identify areas of divergence. They also note the later modifications Bettelheim introduced in his own theories on occasions when the original article was reprinted or revised. In conclusion, we investigate the ways in which Bettelheim's analysis of the camps has been received and cited by later scholars. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Al finalizar un proyecto de investigación, se hace balance del apoyo de los seres queridos y personas que han contribuido en el estudio. Escribo estas palabras con un nudo en la garganta, mientras recuerdo cada uno de los momentos por los que he pasado estos últimos años y que se mantendrán en mi memoria para siempre. En mi mente no falta ninguna de las personas que quizás en este instante, estén leyendo las líneas que escribo en el último proceso antes de dar por concluido este trabajo.En el ámbito profesional, me siento muy afortunada de haber contado con unos directores como Inés y Juan Carlos, que se han implicado diariamente con sus enseñanzas, correcciones, explicaciones y paciencia en este proyecto. Más allá de mi admiración hacia vosotros, está el agradecimiento por vuestra empatía, cariño y respeto mostrado en este largo recorrido, tanto conmigo, como con la temática tratada.
