Stability Considerations for a Synchronous Interconnection of the North American Eastern and Western Electric Grids

Abstract: This paper presents some of the stability considerations for an ac interconnection of the North American Eastern and Western electric grids. Except for a brief time around 1970, the North American Eastern and Western grids have operated asynchronously, with only small power transfers possible through a few back-to-back HVDC ties. This paper provides results from a study showing that an ac interconnection may be possible with only modest changes to the existing transmission grid. The paper's main focus is on th… Show more

“…In extreme cases, the system frequency might oscillate (e.g.,20-second delay case). The heterogeneous cases show a smooth effect in the AGC[51]. In addition, the deviations of the communication variations among different channels are less significant compared with the mean values.…”

“…As shown in Figure 8, SFR is enabled by an AGC model that includes two components: an arealevel model that calculates the ACE from (5) in Figure 8 and a plant-level control model that receives the ACE signal and sets the reference power, ๐‘ƒ๐‘ƒ ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘’๐‘š๐‘š , for each plant. For simplicity, assume there is one area in the simulation and no interchange with other areas, according to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation [50], [51], ACE is defined as, with the interchange metering error ignored, i.e. :…”

“…As an example Figure 2 shows a contour of the temperatures during Winter Storm Uri in 2021 using data from more than 2500 stations. When using this data with the 110,000 bus and 43,000 electric substations of the actual North American power grid used in [22], the average distance between an electric substation and the closest weather station is 19.8 km. However, there certainly can be situations in which standard interpolation does not work well, such as mountains, valleys and some coastal regions.…”

“…E-mail: nyu@ece.ucr.edu. The power system engineering research center (PSERC) has begun to create synthetic dynamical data by simulating more realistic North American Eastern and Western Interconnection models [3]. Many non-data driven modelling approaches to create synthetic data can be found in literature.…”
