Stability of a rotating plasma with anisotropic pressure

Abstract: An investigation has been made of the hydromagnetic stability of an infinitely extended, uniformly rotating configuration of dilute plasma subjected to the influence of a strong homogeneous magnetic field. These assumptions lead to a plasma pressure of tensorial nature. The effect of self-gravitation of the medium has also been incorporated in view of its astrophysical significance. It is shown that the system is, in general, unstable. Criteria of instability in terms of pressures, parallel and perpendicular t… Show more

“…[15][16][17][18][19] Gliddon 20 has investigated the gravitational instability of anisotropic pressure plasma using the CGL fluid theory and found that for anisotropic velocity distribution plasma exhibits the "firehose" and the gravitational instabilities. It has been also observed that the "firehose" instability criterion in collisionless anisotropic pressure plasma remains unaffected due to the presence of heat-flux corrections.…”

“…The problems of astrophysical interest in rarefied plasma have been investigated by many workers. GLIDDON [5] has discussed the condition of 'hose' and gravitational instability for a homogeneous collisionless plasma The instability condition of a rotating plasma with anisotropic pressure has been investigated by TANDON and TALWAR [6], and BHATIA [7]. ABRAHAM-SHRAUNER [8] has studied the propagation of hydromagnetic waves through an anisotropic plasma by plotting phase speed polar diagrams.…”

“…Bhatia & Chhonkar (1985) studied the instability in a horizontal layer of stratified compressible isotropic and anisotropic plasmas including the effect of the Coriolis force and finite ion Larmor radius simultaneously and observed that the Coriolis force has a stabilizing influence on the instability. Tandon & Talwar (1963) have discussed the stability of a rotating plasma with an anisotropic pressure. Hau & Wang (2013) have investigated the effects of Hall current and electron temperature anisotropy on proton firehose instabilities.…”
