Stability of Frequent Exacerbator Phenotype in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract: Background: At present, there is little information in Bulgaria regarding the rate and stability of frequent-exacerbation phenotype in COPD patients. Aim: To study the rate and stability of frequent-exacerbation phenotype in COPD patients. Materials and methods: We followed up 465 COPD patients for exacerbations over a 3-year period. Exacerbations were defined as events that resulted in treatment with antibiotics and/or corticosteroids (moderate), or that led to hospitalization (severe). Result: Approximately … Show more

“…In addition to exacerbation history, disease severity and bronchodilator reversibility were also strong predictors for future exacerbations [ 8 , 14 , 16 , 18 20 , 22 24 , 26 , 28 , 29 , 33 , 37 , 40 , 43 46 , 48 , 50 52 , 56 , 59 , 62 78 ]. The association with disease severity was noted in studies that used GOLD disease stages 1–4 and those that used FEV 1 percent predicted and other lung function assessments as continuous variables.…”
