Stability of Glutaraldehyde in Biocide Compositions

Abstract: Glutaraldehyde (GA) is used as biocide in hospitals. Recent public investigations on the chemical composition of biocides used in Romania have in some cases found GA, as a key ingredient, to be apparently diluted. However, these data did not explicitly consider the complex chemical equilibria inherent to GA. An investigation of experimental and theoretical data is reported here, assessing the stability of GA solutions relevant for biocide compositions. GA solutions of various chemical composition and under var… Show more

“…Here, the hydroxylated Si 3 N 4 surface was taken as a reference spectrum. After APTES-GTA deposition it is possible to observe the appearance of signals in a range between 1100 cm −1 and 1800 cm −1 , which could be related to the presence of NH 2 , CH 2, and CHO groups in the APTES and GTA molecules [ 25 , 26 , 27 ]. After biotin is deposited on the functionalized samples, an enhancement of the same peaks can be observed, since these previously mentioned groups are also present in the biotin molecules [ 28 ].…”

“…Regarding GA treatments, the interaction of GA with amino groups in proteins and enzymes provides GA with disinfectant properties. Its two aldehyde groups also enable it to be used as a cross-linking agent, creating polymeric and nonpolymeric species while specifically targeting amino groups, which has biocidal effects [ 32 ]. We hypothesized that this mechanism could decrease protease activity, which is better for protein preservation, in comparison to that of the control, whereas protein cross-linking might affect how organic matter is digested.…”

“…Accordingly, the absence of peaks of pure GA in the presence of MNP-GA indicates that GA remains on the MNP surface. 22 Coating with glutaraldehyde was performed to maintain the magnetic nanoparticles' stability, prevent agglomeration and bind the drug.…”
