In this study, the Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) model is employed to create a data-driven prediction for the bearing capacity of a strip footing on rock mass subjected to an inclined and eccentric load. The strengths of rock masses are based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. To develop the set of training data in MARS, the lower and upper bound finite element limit analysis (FELA) is carried out to obtain the numerical results of the bearing capacity of a strip footing with the width of B. There are six considered dimensionless variables, including the geological strength index (GSI), the rock constant/yield parameter (mi), the dimensionless strength (γB/σci), the adhesion factor (α), load inclined angle from the vertical axis (β), and the eccentricity of load (e/B). A total of 5,120 FELA solutions of the bearing capacity factor (P/σciB) are obtained and used as a training data set. The influences of all dimensionless variables on the bearing capacity factors and the failure mechanisms are investigated and discussed in detail. The sensitivity analysis of these dimensionless variables is also examined.

Limit equilibrium (LE) method is the most widely used method for slope stability analysis. Different methods based on the LE technique for the analysis of the stability of the slope have been developed. Some are based on satisfying the force equilibrium condition of the failing mass (Janbu’s method), while some focus on satisfying the moment equilibrium condition (Bishop’s method). Among these methods, the most accurate result is provided by the Morgenstern–Price method as it not only satisfies both moments as well as a force equilibrium condition but also considers the interslice shear forces (Vi) and interslice normal forces (Ei), which are neglected by most of the LE methods to avoid the condition of indeterminacy. To accommodate these forces, Morgenstern–Price (MP) gave a relation between the Vi and Ei which depends upon a scaling multiplier (λ). Thus, it becomes necessary to evaluate λ value along with the factor of safety (FS). There is barely any work discussing the detailed methodology of evaluation of λ along with FS. Method for obtaining λ along with FS have been developed and elaborated in details here. While calculating FS (MP method), evaluation of Ei is a must which is dependent upon the values of normal force at the base of each slice (Ni) and FS, which itself is dependent upon the value of Ei, making it a loop of interdependent variables. To avoid this interdependency of above stated variables, a separate formulation of Ei is given which reduces the calculations (run-time) involved. A VBA code-based platform has also been developed incorporating the generalized LE method, including Bishop’s, Janbu’s, and Morgenstern–Price methods which are represented in the form of flowcharts in this work.

In practice, footings are rarely laid on the surface or at ground level; usually, they are embedded in the soil medium. Most studies focus on surface footings. This research examines the behavior of two interfering asymmetric footings while considering their widths to be dissimilar and the effect of embedment depth to enhance the ultimate bearing capacity and limit the settlement within the working range. This was evaluated through the finite element method of the ABAQUS software. The soil was assumed to have a Mohr-Coulomb failure, and the asymmetry corresponded to the footing widths. The results are presented in terms of interference factors, i.e., the ultimate bearing capacity (UBC) and the settlement, which are defined as the UBC/settlement ratio of the left/right footing in the presence of the other one placed on reinforced soil. This, in comparison with an identical isolated footing on unreinforced soil. Interference is more significant in small footings than in large ones. Due to behavioral variations, the bearing capacity and settlement are different. This effect increases with an increase in the width of large footings, and the interference factors decrease with an increase in the embedment depth of the footings. When the right footing width is twice that of the other and considering one layer of reinforcement and soil friction angles of 30º and 40º, the percent increments in the bearing capacity of interfering left footings, for a spacing of 0,5 times the left footing width, are 104 and 148%, respectively.
