“…Based on the application of standardised methods to the measurement of the prevalence of asthma and wheezing illness in children [5] and adults [7], it appears that the global prevalence of asthma ranges 1-18% of the population in different countries. Its prevalence has been increasing in some countries [8,9] but has stabilised or even begun to decline in others [10,11]. The WHO has estimated that 15 million disability-adjusted life-yrs are lost annually due to asthma, representing 1% of the total global disease burden [12].…”

“…The country has a central plateau which extends almost to the coasts. This plateau has a mean altitude of about 800 m. The ISAAC study (in children of both 13-14 and 6-7 years old) has been carried out in different Spanish cities both on the coasts and on the plateau, and was undertaken in 1994 (Aguinaga-Ontoso et al 1999) and 2002(Garcia-Marcos et al 2004.…”

“…The data for asthma prevalence were obtained from the ISAAC study for the groups of 6-7 years and 13-14 years from Phase III from the years 2002-2003 and included the centres in Asturias, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, La Coruña, Madrid, San Sebastian, Valencia and Valladolid. The study conditions have been described previously (García-Marcos et al 2004) and are based on standardised questionnaires for asthma, rhinitis, and eczema answered by the adolescents of 13-14 years, and by the parents in the case of the 6-to 7-year-old schoolchildren, with the mean participation being 88.5% in the older age group, and 72.3% in the younger age group (Carvajal-Urueña et al 2005). …”
