Stable low molecular weight RNA profiling showed variations within Sinorhizobium meliloti and Sinorhizobium medicae nodulating different legumes from the alfalfa cross-inoculation group

Abstract: Four different low molecular weight (LMW) RNA profiles, designated I-IV, among 179 isolates from Medicago, Melilotus and Trigonella species growing in a field site in Northern Spain were identified. From sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA, atpD and recA genes as well as DNA-DNA hybridization analysis with representatives of each LMW RNA profile it was evident that isolates with LMW RNA profiles I and II belonged to Sinorhizobium meliloti and those displaying profiles III and IV to Sinorhizobium medicae. Therefo… Show more

“…In genus Ensifer , E. meliloti RPA13 and RTM17 and E. medicae RMP01, RMP05, RPA08, RPA11 and RPA20 belong to the same biovar (meliloti) [49]. However, in agreement with rrs and housekeeping gene analyses (figures 2, 3 and 4), the strains of these both species were clearly distinguished by MALDI-TOF MS (Table 2F).…”

“…Only S. meliloti was isolated from nodules of Medicago lupulina in the present study, while this legume mainly nodulated with S. medicae in Northern Spain (Del Villar et al 2008) and with diverse populations related to Rhizobium spp., S. fredii and S. meliloti in Qinghai-Tibet plateau (Kan et al 2007;Hou et al 2008). Similar situations were also found in rhizobia associated with G. max, G. soja, K. stipulacea P. vulgaris, and L. bicolor (Table 3).…”

“…The class 1 and class 2 tRNA patterns of RTM17 and the bean isolate were identical, while the two tRNA patterns produced in the lanes with the type strains for S. fredii, S. medicae, and S. meliloti were dissimilar. Therefore, the bean isolates from Lanzarote were placed in LMW RNA group II of S. meliloti as described recently by del Villar et al (5).…”
