Stable, Low‐Temperature Discotic Nematic Superstructures by Incorporating a Laterally Substituted Sidearm in Hexakis(phenylethynyl)benzene Discogens

Abstract: A new strategy for preparing room‐temperature discotic nematic materials is proposed and developed stepwise to improve various discotic nematic properties. This approach replaces one sidearm of the discotic hexakis(4‐hexyloxyphenylethynyl)benzene with a tris(alkoxy) sidearm, 1‐ethynyl‐2,3,4‐tris(hexyloxybenzene), to lower transition temperatures, manipulate discotic nematic ranges, and preserve the discotic nematic superstructure while preventing column formation. Although symmetry considerations play a role i… Show more

“…However, in most of the cases, the packing is not disordered enough to exhibit the nematic phase at room temperature. Previously, room‐temperature N D mesophases have been obtained by perturbing the symmetry of the PA unit leading to more disordered systems . Here, we reveal that grouping of PA units by connecting them with a short azobenzene linking unit by flexible spacers could show a room‐temperature N D phase.…”

“…Later on, the discotic TP core possessing poly(ethylene oxide) side chains was also found to possess a room‐temperature N D phase . Lee and co‐workers developed a new strategy to obtain a N D phase by replacing one side‐arm of the discotic multi‐alkynylbenzene with a trisalkoxy side‐arm . Further, they showed a room‐temperature N D phase over a wide temperature range by introducing an attraction‐enhancing protrusion onto the multi‐alkynylbenzene system .…”

“…Although, methyl groups at the meta -position lead to a decrease of the melting transitions, almost room temperature stable discotic nematic liquid crystals have been obtained only by desymmetrization of the star mesogen [237]. Such nematic phases are attractive for the application in wide viewing angle nematic displays [238]. …”
