Stable super-hydrophobic and comfort PDMS-coated polyester fabric

Abstract: Super-hydrophobic fabrics have shown great potential during the last decade owing to their novel functions and enormous potential for diver’s applications. Surface textures and low surface energy coatings are the keys to high water repellency. However, the toxicity of nanomaterials, long perfluorinated side-chain polymers, and the fragile of micro/nano-texture lead to the super-hydrophobic surfaces are confined to small-scale uses. Thus, in this article, a stable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated super-hydrop… Show more

“…There are a lot of studies in literature regarding methods of treating polyester surfaces in order to increase the hydrophobicity of surfaces [9,50,51]. Of these, sol-gel coatings are well known and intensively studied and, therefore, in the present work, by varying the silica network modifiers, it is expected that coatings with hydrophobic properties will be obtained (Figure 5).…”

“…As a matter of fact, fluorine and silicon finishing compounds are the most often used finishing agents [11,12]. In the past, despite their remarkable water repellent qualities, the most common industrial water-repellents contained perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate, which were hard to breakdown and presented the risk of significant harmfulness and bioaccumulation [13][14][15]. For these reasons, their usage has been restricted, making critical the development of water repellents free of fluorine compounds.…”
