The increasing proportion of ethnic minorities in Britain has been paralleled by an increase in the occurrence of mixed ethnic marriages between one White partner and an ethnic minority partner. Such marriages are thought to be at higher risk of divorce, but empirical studies so far have been inconclusive. This paper uses the Office for National Statistics longitudinal study for England and Wales to investigate whether mixed ethnic unions are more likely to end in divorce than co-ethnic unions. We followed married couples in 1991 to 2001 and examined their risks of divorce. We found evidence that mixed ethnic unions have a higher risk of dissolution than co-ethnic unions. However, after controlling for partners' characteristics, most importantly the younger ages of people in mixed ethnic unions, the risk of divorce for mixed ethnic unions was no longer elevated, but lay close to the higher risk found for the two constituent co-ethnic unions.

International audienceLes conflits conjugaux sont en partie révélateurs du fonctionnement des interactions conjugales. Aussi, dans le cadre d’enquêtes longitudinales, certains répondants qui souhaitent préserver l’image de leur couple pourraient refuser de renouveler leur participation pour ne plus avoir à donner à voir les désaccords qu’ils ont avec leur conjoint. Cet article propose alors d’étudier en quoi l’attrition de l’enquête « Étude des relations familiales et intergénérationnelles » – qui touche 35% de l’effectif initial des répondants – est liée aux désaccords des enquêtés lors de la première vague de l’enquête. Les résultats montrent que ceux qui font le moins mention de leurs désaccords participent plus rarement à la vague suivante, et ce, en raison de moindres capitaux socioculturels leur permettant d’exprimer leurs désaccords. À l’inverse, ceux qui renouvellent l’enquête en profitent pour se délivrer de certaines frustrations et insatisfactions engendrées par les désaccords qu’ils ont eus avec leur conjoint. Ces insatisfactions concernent particulièrement l’éducation des enfants pour les femmes, et les relations sexuelles pour les hommes

Marital Adjustment and Duration of Marriage among Postgraduate Iranian Students in Malaysia

The current study aimed to examine the relationship between marriage duration and marital adjustment of married Iranian students at postgraduate level in Malaysian universities. To this end, 220 randomly selected married participants completed an online questionnaire via email. The respondents were questioned about their demographic information and completed Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test (LWMAT; Locke & Wallace, 1959). Data analysis provided information about mean scores, frequencies, percentages, and Pearson's correlation. The results disclosed that there was no correlation between length of marriage and marital adjustment and marital adjustment remained fairly stable over time. This study also discusses the popularity of studying in Malaysia among Iranian students at postgraduate levels.
