Staged Joint Arthrodesis in the Treatment of Severe Septic Ankle Arthritis Sequelae: A Case Report

Abstract: Septic ankle arthritis is a devastating clinical entity with high risks of morbidity and mortality. Prompt treatment is necessary because delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to irreversible damage that may occur on the articular surface, resulting in cartilage erosion, infective synovitis, osteomyelitis, joint deformity, and pain and joint dysfunction. An aggressive surgical approach is required when a joint infection causes severe limb-threatening arthritis. A 58-year-old woman visited our clinic with in… Show more

“…Joint arthrodesis and staged reconstruction are the two main methods suggested to provide the best management outcomes [ 56 ]. Staged reconstruction employing spanning external fixators to gradually distract soft tissues and tarsal bones is more appropriate for treating elderly or untreated Lisfranc injuries than single-stage surgical release, according to research by Pin Feng, Ya-Xing Li, and colleagues in 2017 [ 55 , 48 ].…”

“…Muscle force and movement control are impaired if the injured ankle does not receive prompt and professional rehabilitation treatment, resulting in FAI ( Freeman, 1965 ; Kim et al, 2021 ). Patients with FAI are almost five times more likely to sustain repeated episodes of ankle instability and recurrent ankle sprains than are healthy individuals ( Mckay et al, 2001 ; Kaminski et al, 2003 ; Raymond et al, 2012 ; Gouttebarge et al, 2017 ), leading to irreversible damage to ankle stability ( Hong et al, 2021 ).…”
