Stages of Change in Physical Activity: A Validation Study in Late Adolescence

Abstract: The present study explores the validity of a recent stages of change (SoC) measure and algorithm among a sample of late adolescents. MANOVA and structural equation modeling are used to assess the relationship between five SoC groups (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance) and a set of dependent measures including physical activity level, physical activity motivation, physical self-concept, and flow. Findings are based on 705 Australian adolescents, using scale score and latent v… Show more

“…According to Prochaska's (2008) stages of change theory, this shift, especially in Becky's attitude towards exercise, is important in leading to longer term and sustainable changes in her daily physical activity levels. Previous research with adolescents has found that the attitudinal shift towards enjoying exercise is necessary for establishing positive activity behaviours and lifelong habits (Parker et al 2010). Blair and LaMonte (2006) claimed Nicola Bacon, Louise Farnworth and Richard Boyd that this increased participation in physical activity will have led to improvements in the participants' fitness levels, and thus their overall health and wellbeing, regardless of whether or not it also resulted in weight loss.…”

“…Group 5, the cross-validation sample, consists of 708 adolescents (51% female; M age = 17 years) in their last year of high school, from metropolitan Sydney (see Parker, Martin, Martinez, Marsh, & Jackson, 2010). Participants completed the PSDQ-S as part of a larger battery of tests related to physical activity, health, and the transition from high school.…”
