Stakeholder Views on Land Reclamation and Marine Environment in Doha, Qatar

Abstract: Due to the ever-increasing necessity of dry land for agricultural, industrial, urban development or port expansions, some countries use land reclamation methods to gain land from sea. Land reclamation activities normally take place along the coastline and primarily affect coastal and marine habitats close to the shore. The aim of the study is to evaluate using literature, remote sensing data and participatory tools that promote a comprehensive examination of the perceptions held by key stakeholder groups, the … Show more

“…As could be expected, they have chosen to do so through a plethora of charming international branding initiatives of which Qatar's 'Lusail Smart City', Abu Dhabi's 'Masdar City' and Dubai's 'Media City' and 'Internet City' have perhaps received the greatest international media coverage [3,11,21], although signs reveal that stakeholder approval is mixed [22]. “…Lusail City, an expanse of 35 km 2 , is a further huge area of land reclaimed from the sea in northern Doha. Hamad International Airport in the south of Doha is approximately 22 km 2 , and 60% of this is reclaimed land [66]. Major projects such as Hamad Sea Port [67], the new Doha International Airport [68], the Sharq Crossing [69], and some artificial islands are all developed along the coast, dredging up the sea.…”

“…Based on a study carried out in Doha, Qatar, to assess the harmful impacts of major land reclamation projects, the pearl island, Lusail City, and Hammad International Airport using a stakeholder participatory approach. It was found that land reclamation projects without proper planning had harmful and damaging impacts on coastal and marine environments, resulting in a high level of sedimentation, odor, and turbidity followed by fluctuation in pH values, which might increase the probability of disturbing the food chain and the oxygen level essential for the survival of the marine life (Naimi et al, 2018).…”
