Marine debris mitigation should be conducted thoroughly especially in the level where they are originated, which is household and settlement areas. In developing countries, waste management in household level has been a challenge because it has never been done properly. This study aims to evaluate the content and the application of waste management guidelines in settlement areas along the river, to assess the level of understanding of each head of family in using the guidelines and to assess the awareness level in doing the waste management. There are two aspects of waste management in household level: 1) waste management mechanisms, and 2) awareness of each head of family in was management. Mechanism aspect of waste management consists of two components. They are (1) guidelines in management mechanisms (which consists of guideline content and level of understanding-compliance) and (2) implementation of management mechanisms. Awareness aspect of each head of family in conducting waste management were assessed based on three components, they are 1) knowledge, 2) concern, and 3) willingness. A number of 249 households (from a total 453 who live in both sides of the river) were interviewed (as respondents) and they were chosen randomly. The respondent was those with family (parents and children) and the head of the household. The interview was conducted using a questionnaire, which content several questions related to the assessed aspects. The data was quantitatively analysed using a simple Statistics obtain percentages. The result shows that the a detailed content of guidelines on how to properly manage the was not found, the level of understanding on waste management was still low, the implementation of waste management in the level of household has not been done properly, and the willingness to share the finance in waste management is also low. It is then concluded that waste management at the household level in the regions faces various challenges. The best choice in waste management aspect at the household level is given in in this paper.

To promote residents’ waste separation behavior, waste separation supervision has been a crucial need. This paper aims to explore the supervision mechanism of residents’ waste separation behavior using a tripartite evolutionary game model. The evolutionary stability conditions of resident, property service enterprise, and the government were analyzed. The influences of the main parameters on the strategy of three stakeholders were explored through numerical simulation. The results show that the regulatory mechanism of waste separation will reach the optimal stable strategy when the following conditions are satisfied: (1) the penalty for nonclassification is higher than the difference between classification cost and the total benefit of classification; (2) the subsidy to property services enterprise is greater than the total cost of positive participation management. Residents’ behaviors are mainly influenced by rewards and punishments. The behavioral strategies of property service companies are more sensitive to subsidies than penalties. In the early stage of mandatory waste separation, it is important to reduce the cost of residents’ separation, develop the publics’ environmental awareness, and increase the willingness of properties to participate in management. This paper presents a new perspective and theoretical guidelines for the local government and communities to supervise residents’ waste separation behaviors in China and other developing countries and offers useful insights into waste separation management for other countries.

The circular economy (CE) aims to deeply transform the current linear model of economy and society into a business model capable to extend the lifetime of resources and decrease environmental impacts. For this to happen, changes in societal systems and production sectors, from micro to macro, are required.The present research, based on a multiple case‐study explorative approach of circular start‐ups (CSUs), investigates their adoption of environmental impact assessment methods, environmental and social certifications and contribution to a better integration of the social dimension in the CE model. Results indicate that three out of six CSUs carefully measure and certify their environmental and social impacts. Life Cycle Assessment resulted the most adopted environmental assessment method, while two CSUs are also certified benefit corporations. CSUs are mainly oriented toward the use of quantitative methods for the measurement of environmental and social impacts. Additional efforts are still needed toward the implementation of qualitative methods to properly highlight the achievement of social benefits (environmental and social awareness, employees' engagement, work time and free time balance, consumers health and safety, among others) for their stakeholders (workers, local community, consumers). Nevertheless, CSUs case studies highlight their potential of supporting the transition toward a fair CE while at the same time facilitating the integration of social dimension aspects into the CE model. Finally, by developing appropriate business to consumer models, CSUs can strongly affect consumption behaviors and habits, making them also more aware and responsible of their environmental and social life cycle impacts and improvement potential.
