Standard Medical Management in Secondary Prevention of Ischemic Stroke in China (SMART)

Abstract: This is a multicentre, parallel, randomized, open label, controlled trial to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of a recommended guideline based program (SMART) in secondary stroke prevention. Forty-eight sites across Mainland China will participate in the trial. The number of enrolled patients in the study will be 4074. “…Data were collected from SMART study, which was a multicenter, randomized controlled trial to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of a guideline-based program in secondary stroke prevention across 47 hospitals in China. A detailed description of study protocol and main results of SMART has been published elsewhere ( 13 , 14 ). A total of 3821 participants with a first-ever ischemic stroke within 30 days were enrolled in SMART study between April 2008 and December 2010.…”

“…Based on a multi-center database [SMART, Standard medical management in secondary prevention of ischemic stroke in China ( 21 )], we sought to clarify the lesion pattern of MI. The lesion-etiology correlations based on angiography and lesion topography were also assessed, with particular emphasis on distinction between large artery atherosclerosis and small vessel occlusion.…”

“…Data were obtained from SMART study, which is a large prospective nationwide multi-center and cluster-randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of a guideline-based structured care program for secondary stroke prevention, as opposed to usual care treatment, in China. Complete design and main results of the SMART study has been detailed elsewhere [ 20 , 21 ]. In brief, measures of intervention in SMART group was in line with the current guidelines for the secondary prevention of AIS, comprised of pharmaceutical treatment, lifestyle modification and patient education, while the usual care group received only interventions chosen by their physicians based on their knowledge or experiences.Glucose levels were determined by plasma venous FBG drawn within 24 hours after admission.…”
